ERCP preparation: what information must be shared?
A clear therapeutic goal is important before ERCP. Stone extraction, stricture treatment, drainage or stenting require different strategies, so prior MRCP, CT, EUS and ERCP reports should be available whenever possible.

Blood thinners, diabetes medicines, allergies, heart or lung disease and previous anaesthesia problems must be disclosed. Medicines should not be stopped without an individual plan.

Fever, chills, worsening jaundice or severe abdominal pain may suggest biliary infection and should be reported before the procedure. Fasting and morning medicines should follow the treating unit’s written instructions.

After ERCP, observation may be needed for pancreatitis, bleeding, infection or other complications. Before discharge, patients and companions should know which warning symptoms require urgent reassessment.
